REVIEW
The author, Mr. Moretto, is giving an approach to teaching kids an easier way to multiply and divide. Mr. Moretto saw the level that the young ones were rated in 2010 in math and science. He felt that they needed an addition to what they were currently learning. Thus, FEAR NO NUMBERS. Some readers might recall the "casting out nines" for checking your arithmetic. It isn't taught much anymore though. Mr. Moretto sets a firm foundation for that method.
Mr. Moretto's "Proof by 9 system (TM)" is a theory to look at the problem in a different way using fast and simple ways. He states that it's not likely that "you can do every multiplication and division operation exact each and every time. " The ,author shows examples that are clear that shows the technique. I wished that the author had shown some examples of unsuccessful problems This method is easy to use. I liked the fact that he encourages and helps the reader understand that everyone makes mistakes. The utmost objective is to realize that you must recognize when that happens and how to fix it. This is a new era and with that we need easier and more efficient ways of doing things. I myself, am going to keep trying this method. I would recommend this book to everyone, young and old. You're never to old to learn. I feel that the author has introduced a method that can save time and money. We just have to adjust our attitudes that there are better ways. Pick up[ a copy and decide for yourself. If you have a child that is having difficulty with his numbers, this book may help.
I would give this book 4 STARS.
I was given a complimentary copy of FEAR NO NUMBERS by the author, Jose Paul Moretto for this honest review.
Older readers may remember "casting out nines," a technique for checking basic arithmetic. It hasn't been widely taught in years, though, and is well overdue for a revival. Moretto provides a solid foundation for that revival.
Checking the arithmetic by doing it over is one approach, but could be time consuming and opens the possibility of repeating an error made the first time. But, by adapting results from number theory, it's possible to re-examine a problem differently, and with fast and simple operations, which Moretto codifies as his "Proof by 9 system (TM)". It's an exaggeration to say that "you can do every multiplication and division operation right every time," because switching a 9 for a 0 won't be caught, nor swapping two correct digits, nor lost of other errors. Still, checking a lengthy calculation early and often will eliminate a great many arithmetic errors near their sources. The author provides plenty of clear, worked examples to demonstrate the technique. A few more samples for readers to work might have helped the presentation, though. Likewise, showing only successful multiplications and divisions leaves the reader without cases where the technique shows how mistakes have been made.
The value of Moretto's approach is undiminished by a number of debatable statements in this book, like the "right every time" quote cited above. Early on, he notes Fermat's reticence about having his name attached to his publications. This might not have been the simple shyness described in this book, but a consequence of Fermat's high position in the legal system, where need for impatiality limited his contacts in many ways. Moretto also takes the well-established notion of a digital root and renames it a "single whole number," and states that "examples [prove] the validity" of the method. In formal math, examples can only disprove a statement, never prove it, no matter how much they might bolster one's confidence in the assertion.
Despite weaknesses like these, Moretto's method is sound, straightfoward, and easy to use. His text maintains an ecouraging, even excited tone, and should help dispel some readers' math-phobia brought on by fear of getting it wrong. Everyone gets things wrong - the key lies in recognizing when that's happened and fixing it. This book does a great job of adding the find-and-fix step to basic calculation.

José Paul Moretto is a teacher of the first order. Though all we know about the author of this innovative book that breaks a number of barriers to learning math skills is what the PR states `Inspired by his math teacher, J. Paul Moretto has since developed newer mathematical theorems. His insight into math was essential, when serving in the French Air Force, and then at Citroën.' Simply picking up this colorfully designed cover book we enter his world of fascination with numbers and especially his concern for the low ranking of math proficiency in our young people, and allows us access to his system of mathematical theorems - The Proof by 9 System and the MaXima System - and by learning these logical and rather easy to absorb and use techniques, we learn how to simplify large numbers and a shorter way of solving division problems.
Moretto uses the tried and true method of student seduction by first addressing the history of mathematics - and this alone is worth the purchase of the book so concise and yet learned is his summary. But then it is off to the races and with his slowly supportive methodology, he outlines and demonstrates his theorems and makes them as fun as games.
For every student from pre-teens on up (and yes, that does indeed include the older set confused at times with the disruptive non-human errors encountered in using a calculator) this book will suddenly make the challenge of mathematics into the pleasures of Moretto Math! Highly recommended! Grady Harp, June 13
